Do Health Care Decisions Boil Down to How Good Looking You Think You Are?
This really shocked us, but it is what it is (maybe). In the research report entitled “Post COVID-19, still wear a face mask? Self-perceived facial attractiveness reduces mask-wearing intention” the researchers concluded (with some reservations) that “self-perceived facial attractiveness reduces mask-wearing intention." The study conducted found that individuals who perceive themselves as more attractive are less likely to wear a face mask because they believe it reduces their attractiveness and makes them less attractive to others. In other words, this study concluded that people who think they are good-looking will have less desire or intention or wear a face mask when they don’t have to.
And that leads us to the concept of mask fishing, which is defined in Urban Dictionary as “The phenomenon where a person appears to be more attractive because they are wearing a facemask.” Quoting from the Post-Covid-19 article (cited above), Koreans coined the term “ma-gi-kkun,” literally referring to less attractive people who intentionally wear a mask to deliver a more favorable impression than their uncovered face would do. Additionally, … [in] Japan (i.e., masuku-sagi) to indicate how relatively unattractive individuals appear more attractive when using a mask to cover up. The use of these neologisms suggests that individuals who perceive themselves as attractive (vs. unattractive) are more (vs. less) likely to believe that wearing masks gets in the way of gaining more favorable judgments from others regarding their attractiveness.
Is this really a thing? Are people so vain that they won’t wear a mask because they feel they are just too good looking? Do people who feel less good-looking want to wear a mask because they think that the mask will make them (overall) look more attractive?
And, more than all of this, none of these studies address the demographic of people who (despite how attractive they do or do not believe they are) wish to wear a face mask in various circumstances simply because they feel SAFER doing so. Where are the studies on this? Also this is far less salacious, this is (in our estimation) the real issue to be researched because it has not been research (as far as we can tell).
Beyond that small rant, out of pride I do want to add that we designed the VeraShield XP to be very fashion-forward, attractive, and as adding more attractiveness to ANYONE who wears our face mask whenever and wherever they choose to.
